The Prototype: From Kiln Test to Validated Piece

The kiln is the point where the project stops being a drawing. Lava reacts and becomes glazed lava stone: glazes behave differently according to the structure they find beneath, and knowledge of those reactions is what a family quarry in Terzigno and a workshop at the foot of Vesuvius accumulate over time.

The prototype exists to show that behavior on that stone, in that thickness and under that light. Ranieri documentation describes different firings and techniques — iridescent enamels, reagent enamels in double application, colored crystal on enamel, through to the third fire of the Gold finish — and each yields a surface to be seen in person before it is repeated.
