Stone or Ceramic: Two Ways of Working Lava Stone

Glazed Lava The Language of Fire and Color

Two roads lead out of the same block cut at Terzigno. One leaves the lava exposed and works the stone for what it is, with cutting and hand chiselling; the other takes it back into the fire and hands it over to colour, in the vocabulary of ceramics. Both begin with the material itself, the Vesuvian lava as Ranieri describes it.

The difference reaches the project before the product: it changes how the surface meets light, how far one slab resembles the next, how the edge behaves. Three variables an architect specifies.

Here the two ways of working stand side by side: what each does to the material, where each is used, and on what grounds the choice is made.

Natural and Glazed Lava Stone: One Material, Two Kinds of Work

Before either road begins there is one fact: a block from the family quarry at the foot of Vesuvius, its mineral history already written. The Ranieri catalogues name four base materials, Compact, Texture, Lunar and Pumice, and each accepts different work.

From there the work divides. On the first road the surface stays mineral: cut, chiselled, finished, and what you look at is stone. On the second the kiln bonds a vitrified layer to the face, and the lava goes on working underneath.

In both cases blocks are cut to lengths of up to three metres: the decision concerns the skin, never the mass.

Lava Worked as Stone: Texture, Finishes and the Exposed Face

Leaving the lava exposed means accepting that the surface says where it comes from. This road has two families in the catalogue: bare stone, on Compact and Pumice, in the tones Dark, Brown and Dark Moon; and textural surfaces, on Texture, tooled as Crosta, Dune, Roccia and Linee.

The work is subtractive: hand chiselling and contemporary cutting techniques, and raking light brings out the relief. Here bespoke works by removal: the special finishes go on the bare surface and draw out shades from grey to brown without touching the character of the stone.

Variation between one piece and the next is widest here, a design matter before an aesthetic one: the drawings allow for it in the setting out and at the junctions, and the work is tuned to the piece rather than to the format. Sign-off is on a sample of the piece rather than of the family.

Glazed Lava: When the Surface Becomes Ceramic

Lava is born in fire, and the second road takes it back there. The Ranieri catalogues describe it as the only stone able to withstand the high temperatures of glazing, worked with the techniques of Vietri ceramics.

From that moment the vocabulary is ceramic: in some families the colour rests on a coloured engobe ground; in others, surface definitions among them, the glaze goes straight onto the mineral face. That choice decides how much lava stays legible inside the colour, and at Terzigno that call is made on the block, testing how the stone reacts to fire. Gold, among the metallic stone, goes through a third fire.

Deep color is the widest family, sixteen colours with a palette by David Lopez Quincoces and Francesco Meda, and on lava it develops a fine crackle reaction a project can seek or avoid. Here too bespoke is central: the colour is developed for the project and tested on the lava that project will use, and from there come colours, formats, thicknesses and special pieces.

Why Glazed Lava Stone Counts as a Ceramic

At Terzigno the word ceramic is used for what it describes. A ceramic surface is a mineral body onto which firing bonds a vitrified layer. For lava that is the second crossing of the threshold: the volcano saw to the first. Under the glaze the quarry block remains, and the Ranieri catalogues credit this stone with treatments that ceramic does not allow.

The consequences show at two points. The first is the face: colour takes over from the mineral ground and governs how it reads, with results that differ family by family; the catalogue describes deep color with an opalized finish, very slight undulations and variations in tone. The second is the edge: a stopped edge in stone and a glazed one call for different work.

In section it stays lava: a glazed Ranieri surface behaves like ceramic where you look at it and like stone where you cut it.

Applications Compared: Basins, Worktops, Tiles and Cladding

The two roads answer different questions inside the same project, and Ranieri works both on the same elements: one bathroom can take a basin carved from a solid block, its cut section exposed, alongside a wall in full colour.

Choosing Between Natural and Glazed Lava Stone for a Project

A lava stone surface carries the memory of a flow, and for that reason it is designed more than chosen. The criterion comes down to three questions, none of them about the product.

The first concerns the variation the project can carry. Where variation is the subject, stone left exposed is the direct road; where a field of colour must run across large areas, the glazed road brings it, and the catalogue families govern it differently. The second concerns light: mineral relief that holds it, or a vitrified layer that gives it back. The third concerns the edge, since a stone edge and a glazed one give different profiles.
