From Request to Production Anatomy of a Ranieri Project

A specification almost always arrives in the same form: a drawing, an intended use, and a color the designer has in mind that does not yet exist on stone. Between that moment and the installed surface there is a sequence of trials that behaves like research. It is the least visible part of the cultural projects developed in lava stone, and the part that decides the result.

This is the anatomy of that path, told from the workshop at the foot of Vesuvius: the questions we ask when a brief arrives, the point where lava imposes a correction, the trials that stay on the bench and those that go into production.

The phases repeat on every project. What changes is the matter that passes through them.

The request: brief, constraints and project goals

A lava stone project begins with a conversation. The lava we cut comes from the family quarry in Terzigno and carries a precise mineral history: before formats, we want to know where the surface will live.

The questions are always the same. Which surface — wall, floor, worktop, counter, an element in contact with water — and what light reaches it. What continuity is needed between vertical and horizontal planes, and which junctions the drawing calls for. The technical scope comes from this, before quantities.

Bespoke is our ordinary way of working, never an addition at the end: we enter while the drawing is still open and stay until installation. Supply and fitting is the service the Ranieri catalogues document at Twenty Old Bailey, London 2017, and at Six Milano, hospitality, 2023.

The technical problem to solve

Every project has a knot to untie, and it is almost always the matter that tied it. Lava reacts to cutting, to fire and to glaze, and differently according to the base material: Ranieri documentation distinguishes four — Compact, Texture, Lunar and Pumice — across ten surface families. Knowing those reactions lets us say early what the project can ask of the stone.

Three knots recur. Chromatic: the requested color exists in a fabric or a photograph, and has to be carried onto a dark stone that reckons with light on its own terms. Dimensional: the drawing calls for an element longer than a block allows, and we rethink it as a monolith or an assembly. Functional: in the catalogues, eight of the ten surface families carry the swimming pool application, two stay outside it. Declared applications count, but they come after the matter.

Research and trials: samples, colors and prototypes

Color development starts from a theme color: our craftsmen build a palette of natural gradients and the firing trials begin. This is the color matching described in Ranieri documentation.

A sample is never a single sample. The same shade changes with the way we build it: colored crystal on enamel, colored crystal on a colored engobe background, metallic enamel on natural lava. In deep color, the broadest family with sixteen colors, the color develops a fine crackle reaction on the stone below; in metallic stone, Gold is the only third-fire finish. On the bare surface we apply the special finishes.

We read the samples in the light of the project: a wall in raking light and a floor in shadow give back the same finish as two different materials. Then the prototype settles the decision, and the developed color enters the Ranieri color library.

From specification to production: the solution adopted

Going into production is the moment research becomes a sequence of irreversible choices: what the fire has fixed stays.

Five decisions stay on the bench: material, surface family, color, shape and thickness, special pieces. The catalogued shapes of the Odissea collection measure the field: squares of 50 × 50 and 100 × 100 mm, bars of 300 × 25 and 600 × 40 mm, thicknesses of 10, 20 and 30 mm; and, where relief and raking light are wanted, three-dimensional elements 30 or 50 mm high. Beyond those formats we go back to the block, which we cut up to three meters: the measure that separates what is born monolithic — a basin, a bathtub, a counter — from what we compose in parts.

We decide corners, edges, steps, thresholds and holes here with the designer, and they reach production as dimensioned drawings.

Errors and corrections along the way

Corrections belong to the method: lava is living matter and it sometimes answers differently from what the drawing expected. We recognize these situations, because they recur from project to project.

The first concerns edges. On stopped edges the hand-applied glaze gathers and darkens the line: where the effect is wanted we keep it; where it is unwanted, the Ranieri documentation indicates rounded sections and edges, decided on the drawing before cutting.

The second concerns the metallic finishes. The official warnings recommend avoiding acidic drinks and food on the Metallic Stone Gold of the Core tables, and state that on the Metallic Stone Bronze of the Void tables, tea, coffee or wine damage the finish irreparably. When a metallic is requested for a worktop, we move it onto a wall and resolve the worktop with another family.

The third is about intended use. In the catalogues, linear color and metallic stone are the two families without the swimming pool application: when the project involves water, we keep the color and change family. For textural surfaces products, the Prima catalogues declare a dimensional tolerance of 3–8 mm, which we raise before the construction drawings.

The result: the finished architectural surface

You recognize a finished lava stone surface up close. The color rests on a stone that varies from block to block: mineral micro-differences, crackle and a depth that shifts with the light stay legible, because they are the grammar of the material. From a distance it reads as one continuous plane; step closer and the volcano comes back.

This is the moment the project stops being a set of pieces: corner elements, steps, thresholds and holes fall where the drawing had placed them. Following supply and fitting serves this: decisions reach the site already made at the test bench.

After delivery an archive remains: the developed color stays in the Ranieri color library and we call it back years later, for an extension or a second batch. FAQ

What is needed to have a lava stone project assessed?

The intended use, dimensioned drawings of corners, edges and holes, a theme color reference and the light of the space. From there we identify the compatible surface families and the material that follows, and whether the piece comes from the block or from the catalogued formats.

Why does the glaze look darker along stopped edges?

Because the glaze is applied by hand and gathers on the arris in a thicker layer, which fires to a deeper color. On pieces with many visible edges we ask the designer whether that line should be kept or softened with a rounded section.

How large can a piece cut from a single block be?

The reference is the block from the Terzigno quarry, which we cut up to three meters. Within that measure a basin, a bathtub or a counter is born from one piece; beyond it, the project is composed in parts and the joints become a drawing decision.

Are the metallic finishes suitable for a worktop?

The Ranieri catalogues keep them away from surfaces in contact with food: on Metallic Stone Gold acidic substances are to be avoided, and on Metallic Stone Bronze the marks left by tea, coffee and wine stay permanent. For a worktop we propose another family.

Does Ranieri follow the installation of the surfaces as well?

Yes. Beyond design we follow supply and fitting: the Ranieri catalogues document this service at Twenty Old Bailey, offices in London in 2017, and at Six Milano, a hospitality project of 2023. The decisions taken in the workshop reach the building site directly.
