Lava from the family quarry in Terzigno reaches the workshop with a mineral history already written. A drawing set is where that history meets a precise design intention.

The drawing describes continuous surfaces; at Terzigno the work proceeds element by element, and the first step decides where modularity rebuilds continuity and where a single block is needed. The drawing assumes a homogeneous material; quarried lava carries cavities and densities that change from block to block, and those who work it allow for them rather than correcting them downstream. The drawing fixes a dimension; the piece comes back with the tolerances of the process, and with the edge where the glaze gathers.

Three families of decisions travel this way from the sheet to the workshop at the foot of Vesuvius: modularity, edge and color, settled together with the design studio.

Engineering a Lava Stone Project

Engineering, at Terzigno, breaks the drawing’s intention into the sequence the workshop runs every day: cutting, fire and color.

The first step gives each element a shape, a thickness and one of the ten documented surface families, each built on a base material: Compact, Texture, Lunar or Pumice. A finish comes with the material that carries it.

The second step is color. From a theme color the workshop’s craftsmen develop a palette of natural gradients; once approved, the color is stored in the Ranieri color library for later use. The deep color family — the largest, with sixteen colors and a fine crackle reaction on the stone below — comes out of the workshop’s research on glazes, with the palette designed by David Lopez Quincoces and Francesco Meda.

The third step concerns fire: how many firings the piece needs, and in which order. The Gold finish, the only one at third fire, adds a step.

Production Constraints: Formats, Thicknesses and Achievable Geometries

The constraints of a lava stone surface come from the block and the kiln before any choice within the range. Knowing them early leaves the drawing freer: they turn into parameters instead of surprises.

The shapes documented in the catalogue set the starting grid; the block, which can be cut up to three meters, sets the rest: it decides where a joint can be erased — a basin, a counter, an island top — and where it must be drawn.

A further threshold concerns installation. For products with textural surfaces the Ranieri catalogues declare a dimensional tolerance of 3–8 mm. That margin is where the hand stays visible, and the joint layout absorbs it. Declared applications change from family to family — wall, floor, indoor, outdoor, swimming pool — and the catalogue lists no swimming-pool use for metallic stone and linear color: the choice follows what the space is for.

How a Change Is Agreed Without Losing the Design Intent

A change proposed by the workshop is a question about intention, never a correction of the project. The conversation with the architect separates what on the sheet is intention — proportion, rhythm, continuity, the relationship with light — from what is notation: a dimension, an edge detail.

On the notational side there are usually several routes to the same visible result: keep the module and change the thickness, keep the color and change the surface family, keep the format and cut the element from one block.

A recurring case concerns the edge. On stopped edges the hand-applied glazes gather and leave a deeper tone along the line: a reaction of the matter; where the effect is unwanted, the catalogue offers sections and rounded edges. The choice goes back to the designer as an annotated variant, with the sample in hand.

Feasibility Review: The Checks That Come Before Production

The checks come before the fire. The feasibility review tests the drawing against the matter the workshop has in the quarry: every point still open is settled here.

The schedule of pieces is checked against the documented shapes; elements outside the standard range go to a dedicated assessment. Finish and base material are verified together, family by family. Timing and Phases of Bespoke Lava Stone Work

With lava, time is a material fact. The stone passes through fire, and fire keeps its own rhythms: the calendar is built backwards from the installation date, following the firings the finish calls for.

The phases follow a stable order. Reading the drawing and engineering; color development and sampling, with the designer’s approval; block selection and cutting; surface work, between hand chiseling and contemporary cutting; glazing and firing, with the extra pass through the kiln wherever third fire is involved; inspection and shipping; supply and fitting, when the project includes it.
