Two different materials travel under one name, and a design project pays for the confusion. Crushed volcanic aggregate supplied as filter media is graded rubble: porous, easy to handle in bulk, effective as a substrate for the bacterial colonies that do the actual biological work in a pond or a treatment bed. Architectural lava stone is a quarried and worked material that becomes a finished surface, specified by finish family, format and thickness.

Both come from a volcano. Beyond that they share very little, and a specification that treats them as one material will get the wrong answer to whichever question it was really asking.

The useful distinction is this. Filtration is a plant question, resolved with the pool or water treatment engineer and the media they specify. The non-slip family, coloured matte crystal over a coloured engobe ground in Terra, Havana, Concrete and Rattan, is the family whose stated intent is grip, which places it on the walked surfaces around the water. Textural surfaces and bare stone keep the stone legible where the design wants the geology visible. Heat retention, and why it appears in the declaration

The published documentation gives a physical reason for the pool declaration: lava naturally retains heat. In a pool surround this is the difference between a terrace that can be crossed barefoot in the afternoon and one that cannot, and it is a property of the stone rather than of a coating applied to it.

The same property runs the other way in a spa or an indoor wet room, where a surface that holds warmth changes how the space is used long before anyone discusses appearance. It is worth putting on the drawings as a reason for the choice, because it is one of the few thermal arguments in this category that comes from the material itself.

Edges, copings and the 3 to 8 mm question

Water reveals dimensional tolerance faster than any other condition, because a waterline is a horizontal reference that the eye reads instantly. Products with textural surfaces carry a published dimensional tolerance of 3 to 8 mm, and around a pool that figure needs deciding early.

It rules out details that depend on a flush meeting between a tooled lava element and a machined one: a level junction with a stainless grating, a continuous line into a fitted overflow channel, a zero-joint coping. The answers are shadow gaps, recessed joints and deliberate reveals, and setting out that lets the variation land where it reads as intentional. Where a project genuinely needs dimensional exactness at the waterline, the smoother families are the honest starting point.

Formats give the working range: flat modules at 10, 20 and 30 mm thick, in squares of 50 x 50 and 100 x 100 mm and bars of 300 x 25 and 600 x 40 mm. Three-dimensional profiles run at 30 and 50 mm, and Onda at 800 x 150 x 30 mm.

Water held in one piece

Where a project wants water contained rather than surrounded, the governing figure is the block. Blocks are cut at sizes up to three metres, and that is what allows a basin or a bath to be taken from a single monolithic piece instead of assembled from panels with joints to seal.

A vessel made this way has no internal junctions to fail, which is a durability argument as much as an aesthetic one. What to request before water touches the stone

The published documentation states declared applications, formats, thicknesses and tolerance. The figures a water specification needs beyond that should be requested from the workshop for the exact finish and format: water absorption, frost resistance where the surface is outdoors and unheated, chemical resistance against the treatment regime the pool plant will actually run, and slip resistance class with the test method behind it.

The cleaning and dosing protocol is worth sending along with the request. A finish assessed against the operator’s real routine is a finish that will be judged fairly; one assessed against a generic assumption will be judged by whatever the maintenance team does on a Tuesday.

The question worth asking instead

A design team that starts from filtration is usually asking a plant question in a materials meeting. Water quality in a pool, a pond or a fountain is settled by the treatment system, its media and its maintenance, and the right people to resolve it are the engineers who will sign it off.

What the material decides is different and, over the life of the project, more visible: whether the surface around the water holds its colour, keeps its grip, takes the thermal cycle and still reads as one piece of work after several seasons.
