Lava Stone Textures and Finishes A Guide for Designers

Choosing a lava stone finish from an image is how projects end up with the wrong surface in the right colour.

The range is organised into ten families, and the differences between them are constructional rather than decorative: what the base material is, whether the colour sits on the stone or on a ground layer, how much of the geology stays legible, and which environments the family is declared for.

Those distinctions are visible across the lava stone surface finishes in the collection, and they are what a specification needs to record.

This guide reads the ten families the way a specifier would: grouped by how much stone remains visible, and cross-checked against where each one is approved to go. A useful way to hold the range in mind is as a gradient, running from surfaces where the mineral face is the finish, through surfaces where colour veils it, to surfaces where colour takes over entirely.

Underneath the ten families sit four base materials, and they are named in the documentation for good reason. Compact, Texture, Lunar and Pumice behave differently, and the family assignments follow from that behaviour rather than from styling.

Where the Stone Stays Visible: Bare Stone and Textural Surfaces

Bare stone leaves the mineral face as the finish. Three colours are published: Dark and Brown on Compact material, and Dark Moon on Pumice. Dark and Dark Moon are polished natural stone; Brown is fired polished natural stone, a firing pass applied to the bare face rather than a colour coat. Some types include natural open fissures and holes, while others can be worked to smooth, solid surfaces, which is a question to settle per piece rather than per family.

Textural surfaces sit on Texture material and are tooled rather than coloured: Crosta, Dune, Roccia and Linee are worked finishes, not pigments. Tooling here does two jobs. It adds character and grip, and it camouflages the natural open fissures that bare stone leaves exposed. Where a project wants raw volcanic reading without visible voids, textural surfaces are usually the more workable answer.

One specification note applies across this group: textural surfaces carry a published dimensional tolerance of 3 to 8 mm. Junctions should be detailed with shadow gaps or expressed joints rather than flush abutments.

 

Colour That Lets the Geology Through

Three families apply colour while keeping the stone readable beneath it, and each does so on a different base material.

Tinted stone is the most direct: a colored crystal on natural stone, described as a veil through which grain and mineral flecks stay visible. On lighter tints, small spots appear where the minerality comes through, and slight surface undulation can occur. Four colours are published, on Compact material.

Meteorite works on Lunar material, whose small craters and cavities are the point of the finish. Glaze settles into the natural holes and outlines them, so the surface never repeats. Six colours are published, some as tinted crystal on natural stone and some as colored crystal on enamel, and pieces fired twice over a white glaze foundation show different effects within the pits.

Linear color sits on Texture material, where striations have been tooled into the surface before glazing. Colour then pools in the fissures and thins across the ridges, producing deep accumulations and transparent reliefs within a single piece, with a coarse, strongly haptic edge. Four colours are published. This family is declared for wall, floor, indoor and outdoor use, without swimming pools.

When Colour Takes Over: Citrus Zest, Non-Slip and Deep Color

Citrus zest covers the stone entirely with full-bodied enamel on a coloured engobe ground, yet the geology still asserts itself through undulation and movement rather than through visible mineral. Occasional green or darker splashes appear where minerals exit the interior. Four colours, on Compact.

Non-slip is the matte counterpart, built as a colored matte crystal on coloured engobe. Layer upon layer of opaque glaze mutes the palette to pastels, and the added surface diversity increases slip resistance. Terra, Havana, Concrete and Rattan are the published colours. For wet circulation, pool surrounds and any floor where barefoot traffic is expected, this is the family to look at first.

Deep color is the widest range at sixteen colours, developed as a palette by David Lopez and Francesco Meda. It is a colored crystal on enamel with an opalized finish and a deliberate fine crackle against the stone below. Slight undulation and tonal variation are expected characteristics. Where a stopped edge is used, glaze gathers and fires darker at the arris; rounded edges and profiled sections are the documented alternative.

 

Surface Definitions and Metallic Stone

Surface definitions occupy a category of their own: layers of more opaque glaze superimposed by hand, so the stone appears and disappears across alternating tonal fields. Blue, Blue Moon, Green and Moonlight are iridescent enamels on natural stone. Mars and Venus use reagent enamels in double application, where two layers react during firing to produce movement that cannot be repeated piece to piece.

Metallic stone transforms the surface through iridescence and opacity: Black Platinum and Bronze as metallic enamel on natural lava, Titanium on an engobe ground, and Gold as a third-fire luster over enamel. Crackle and oxidisation variation are intrinsic to the family. Two constraints apply. Metallic stone is declared for wall, floor, indoor and outdoor use, without pools. And two of its finishes carry handling guidance: Gold should avoid contact with beverages and acidic foods, Bronze should avoid tea, coffee and wine, where spills can damage the surface irreversibly.

Selecting by Environment Rather Than by Image

The fastest way to narrow the range is to start from the environment. Eight of the ten families are declared for wall, floor, indoor, outdoor and swimming pool use. Two are declared without pools: linear color and metallic stone. For any dining or preparation surface, the metallic finishes with published contact guidance should be set aside early. For wet floors and barefoot circulation, non-slip is the family designed for the condition.

After environment comes consistency. Engobe-based families, citrus zest and non-slip, are the most chromatically even across large areas. Families applied directly onto the stone, tinted stone, meteorite and linear color, are the most variable, because variation is precisely what they are built to show. A large uninterrupted floor field and a feature wall are different problems, and they resolve to different halves of the range.

Imperfection as a Specification Item

Read the ten Ranieri families together and a pattern emerges that says a good deal about how this material is worked. Every family is documented alongside what it will do unpredictably: spots where minerality surfaces, undulations that transpire, glaze that pools in the fissures, oxidisation that shifts hue, craters that never repeat. These are published as characteristics, in the same register as dimensions and applications.

That is a deliberate position. The conventional treatment of volcanic stone was binary, either raw or fully obscured beneath heavy enamel, and both options treat the mineral face as something to be managed. The thin glazes developed by Ranieri at Terzigno are formulated instead to be read through, so the surface arrives carrying evidence of its own formation.

For a designer, the practical consequence is that variation belongs in the specification rather than in the snagging list. A craquelé in deep color, a darker fissure in linear color, a crater outlined in meteorite: each is the material behaving as documented.
