crafting lava

Transforming Matter into Vision

Architectural Projects gathers the works developed by Ranieri for spaces meant to be inhabited — architecture, interiors, landscapes, public and private environments.
In these contexts, lava is required to meet precise technical demands — durability, stability, safety — without losing its expressive strength. Each project originates from a direct dialogue with architects and designers, translating intention into solutions that are buildable, coherent, and long-lasting. The work does not consist in adapting an existing product, but in defining formats, surfaces, colours, and details according to real use and project conditions. Not every solution is possible, and not every request is compatible with the nature of lava. Part of Ranieri’s role is to establish limits, guide decisions, and protect the project over time. Architectural Projects reflects a practice where technical expertise and material sensitivity operate together, ensuring that performance and presence remain in balance.

TANAT is an architecture, art, and research practice based in Mexico City. Founded by Diego Rivero Borrell.

It is a reaection on the city’s countless and overlapping layers of stories, sedimented symbols, and natural landmarks..

Foscarini - Recycled Lava

In a tribute to the volcanic charisma of the Aeolian Islands, Alicudi, Filicudi and Panarea are the new suspension lamps in recycled lava designed by Alberto and Francesco Meda.

Alicudi, Filicudi and Panarea are the result of Foscarini’s collaboration with Ranieri.

A project that combines experimentation and sustainability, transforming scrap from the working of lavic stone into unique creations. An encounter between industry and craftsmanship, the result of research and experimentation, to express the creative design freedom of Foscarini.

A collection of lamps that embody the rugged beauty of lava, featuring variegated porous surfaces and craters, to transform waste material into a design object that blends aesthetics and sustainability. Another step forward in the experimentation with unusual and unexpected materials for the lighting sector, a distinctive characteristic of Foscarini’s research.

Pdpaola - tic-tac-toe table

A New Creative Landscape Beyond Jewellery.

Meteora X Nilufar

Francesco Meda & David Lopez Quincoces – Stone as Architecture

Unveiled at Milan Design Week 2024 at Nilufar, Meteora is a site-specific installation that explores the architectural potential of lava stone.

Conceived by Ranieri’s creative directors, Francesco Meda and David Lopez Quincoces, the monolithic structure invites visitors into an immersive spatial encounter. A circular chamber entirely clad in lava, it features a single opening toward the sky—a stone telescope framing light and time.

The exterior, finished in “Bare Stone,” reveals the raw, tactile essence of the material. Inside, the glazed finishes from the Odissea collection come alive—layered and translucent, catching and refracting light in unexpected ways.

Meteora is an introspective architecture, a contemplative retreat that deepens the relationship between material and perception. A manifesto for Ranieri’s ability to elevate lava into meaningful, architectural form.

“We envisioned Meteora as a timeless space, where lava stone tells the story of its millennia.”Meda & Lopez Quincoces

Transforming Matter into Vision

Bespoke is where Ranieri enters projects in which material decisions truly matter.
The works presented here result from collaborations with architects, designers, artists and institutions, developed when lava was not treated as a decorative surface, but as a structural, expressive or conceptual element within the project.

Each project required a specific relationship with the material — its limits, its variability, its long-term behavior. There was no catalogue to apply, no predefined solution to replicate. What is shown here is the outcome of real conditions, precise choices and shared responsibility.

Bespoke projects are not demonstrations of versatility, but evidence of commitment.
Ranieri works on a bespoke basis when a project demands attention, dialogue and depth — and when the material is allowed to retain its complexity.
